3 April 1945

I have just received your letter written in haste before leaving for Jerusalem. It gave me enormous pleasure to see that there is still a good chance that you will quit the country to go to France. It’s clear that of all the solutions, that’s the best. Contrary to appearances, the words of Helen that you had the good idea of transcribing for me did not chase away the fear I feel that she will be displeased when she has to get to know me. Darling I have to tell you that I surprise myself more and more. It’s very worrying.  A man’s life is lame when it is bounded by routine and his interior life is intense. But it would be too simple to explain the present me by my actual circumstances. I am a fruit not only of the present but also of the past.

That’s why the fear I feel at each point when I think “seriously” “bourgeoisly” about Helene, you, France and my possibilities (from all angles) is deeper and more dangerous than it appeared at first sight… Now I want to transcribe for you your own words. I do it because they are strangely true. “I have said to you very often that you have nothing to fear about Helen’s welcome. I know her well, this dear good crazy woman!” Yes, really that would be truly madness…

Last time I was preoccupied with my attempts, still fruitless, to understand the new situation which is taking shape on the horizon. I think about the new political line of the organised working class, which I receive in bits and pieces and by the luck of the newspapers that I happen to come across. I have already written of my astonishment after reading Thorez’ declaration. Then came the London conference, which is the signal for a change of attitude of the Palestinian CP with regard to different questions of principle. I have even read an article of Pollit in which he said the following:”We communists were always for collaboration with Capital.” All this, received chaotically is difficult for me to understand and I am afraid of the outcome. Or perhaps I am behind the times, that’s to say I don’t see well the historical development at the base of our victorious anti-fascist war, or perhaps there’s something else that’s not working. All this is larger than a letter. I want however to pause on the Jewish question, since the circumstances oblige me to meet this question a thousand times a day.

The new political line of the Palestine Party consists in the acceptance of the order of the day for a national home for the Jewish people in Palestine and has stirred up all our friends here. For my part, with the best will in the world, I can’t bring myself not to see in it an acceptance the Zionist theory concerning the Jewish question. In other more simple words, we have to recognise now that during all those years of struggle against the Zionist movement, the error was on our side. I seek the deep reasons for this change and I don’t manage to find them. My analysis of the situation invariably leads me to the quite opposite conclusion.  Historically, the fate of the Jewish people is tied by indissoluble ties with the fate of all the oppressed people. And as for all peoples, it is only a socialist regime, which is capable of resolving the problems of the Jewish people. Other ways are reactionary and can only turn the Jewish people away from the right road. Victory in this war is heavy with results in favour of the progressive forces in the world. Wiping out fascism is the beginning of an epoch of a whole series of great conquests for the working class. That’s the only perspective possible. I see there also a terrible blow to the Zionist movement and I cant understand why just now, at this time of immense possibility open to the progressive forces of humanity, we must tie the future of our people to those who by their very nature can only oppress people. It seems to me that the new Party position is false because it’s fundamentally flawed: there’s a total incomprehension of the new situation created at the end of the wiping out of fascism. The new line is defeatist and as always it will pay dearly for it. Can you help me understand the situation better? I am astonished when I think that Pequeno, Bruno and so many others are there…. Soon darling we will see each other. Not on a “leave”. The end of the war,
