The other Sunday I had the opportunity of strolling about Florence. The night before, the first spring rain fell and earth and sky and air were filled with new life and a new and quite glorious beauty…I found myself high up on the Place Michel Angelo by the side of his David. I looked down on Florence…. I imagined how good it would be to stand beside David with you…Next week I have a meeting with Adina and Dido in Florence. They will come there from the South and I from the North. I know how that will be. They will talk to me about politics and I will think about something else. And I will have to respond to them and will come out with stupidities. I will think of you and that marvellous thing which is our love and how good it is that the war, despite all its cruelty has not managed to kill the beauty of the world and of man.
I have received the letter where you tell me of your certainty of being in France this summer. I wish it with all my heart, Yvette. I hope that your mother’s steps are fruitful. You cannot know, my darling, how much my heart is filled with joy at your presence in France in the heart of your family. It is so important for your future. And it will break definitively your relations with Palestine. That’s important. I truly regret not having the strength to write to Helene.
Since we’re talking about France, I want to tell you something else that’s in y heart. I read Thorez’ declaration. It astonished and frightened me a little. And what is worse is that I can’t form a clear opinion since I don’t have all the information about the present situation in France. But I believe in the honesty of men on my side of the barricade that’s why I’m not dejected. In any case, that can’t change in any way my devotion and my enthusiasm for the cause.
As for politics, it seems to me that the most characteristic deed of the time is the Rumanian crime of last week. The ex-Prime Minister seeks refuge in the British Embassy at Bucharest. It’s a deed at first sight insignificant, but how rich in significance it is for me. A deed that in itself epitomises the current situation. Fleeing the anger of his own people, he seeks refuge in the Embassy of a foreign power. And finds it. No comment.
