9 May 1945

Here it is, darling! We have them this time, the Nazis. It is a great day. So much waited for, now it has come, I am plunged into a complete degradation. And although I feel an immense joy deep in my heart, I don’t know how to externalise it. I am incapable of it.  This war which has lasted 12 years – for it began the day Hitler took power – is finished at last. In total victory, physical and moral. From the Atlantic to the Volga all the peoples have suffered the misery of war. Millions of men, women and children have found a horrible death. Whole countries are in ruins. Destruction has never been so great. In all this blood and destruction, the people have learnt a great deal. And they will put it to use. Now the political war begins. Differently painful from that which has just finished. Peace and the liberty of the people which cost a bloody price in uprooting the most desperate enemies. Could never be defended at San Francisco. For there, as Molotov said, they had a tendency to quickly forget the crimes of fascism (Argentina). Peace and liberty will be defended in the factories and field of each people. Above all where there are men of good will. And the two of us, darling, we will find ourselves in their ranks. That is in our blood and in our heads.  And we must do so well, we must Yvette, work so hard until the day when we celebrate, as we celebrate today, the liberation day of all peoples, the German people also.  That day will be celebrated by the German people along with the whole of humanity.  It’s a hard job. It will need intelligence, patience and the spirit of sacrifice, no less than people showed during the war.

We have that. And if we haven’t enough, we will forge it together.

…. PS. I’ve had no news from you for 15 days. I would like to attribute that to our formidable advance in these last weeks.
