The advance is so rapid that one can scarcely draw breath. We do nothing but march north and the “herrenvolk” in the shape of hundreds and thousand of prisoners of war, dirty, famished, fatigue and fear on their faces do nothing but march south; into barbed wire camps. I assure you, Yvette, that that they arouse in me not any feeling of pity. After everything they have done, allied prisoner of war camps are the least punishment possible. It is even too soft. The Red Army in Berlin is no long an order of the day, a dream. It is a reality. It is the last battle, the one that will forge the world of tomorrow. Darling, my sweet little one, in some weeks – some days? – the war will be over. And then, only then will begin the hardest time for everyone. And for me. I ask myself how will I be able to hold on until demob. I want so much to see you. So much to live with you, darling. As long as there was a task to fulfil, I knew how to suffer.
