1 January 1943

Happy New Year Darling! With all my heart, with all the strength of my soul I wish for you what you desire.  That despite the bitterness of the end of the massacre, that France and the world will become free again and that more than before the war, men will rejoice in life, in work, in the beauty of nature and the arts.  But above all, I wish that that the New Year is good for you, dear little Yvette.  That you will be happy, happy, happy, you know, as happy as I want for you. […]

Dearest, my dearest, my little beloved Yvette, I ask only one New Year’s gift for myself. One which encloses in itself every possible happiness for me. And I want it as I have never wanted anything else. It is that you will allow me (bien) to love you as I love you now. That is all. I know it is too much. However, I believe it with all the strength of my heart.  I love you Yvette. Good night and a bientot.  I caress you tenderly my little Fafa.

Your Henri

I am waiting the result of my request for marriage leave with such impatience that your questions on this subject only fill me with joy!  It seems… that it’s a question of days, even of hours. God how long they are, these hours! Thanks for your two letters.
