Yvette to Henri.
Vienna (Austria!) 21 June 1947
I arrived in Vienna three days ago, darling, and I declare that this town has deceived me. I did not expect to see a joyful city, as the films about Strauss showed us, but I expected a beautiful capital. Decidedly nothing equals Paris. Many places are destroyed and what remains is surrounded by ruins…My job began yesterday. It is to examine people who are “displaced persons” and who want to immigrate to France… I want to chat with you. I have already strolled around the town and I heard your sweet voice saying to me:” Look little one, this war. Look at the misery of the people, good and bad, look at the beautiful blond children, what will become of them? I feel you very close to me. How is it with you Henri darling? Henri, don’t you want to help me? You said to me long ago that you would always come to me when I needed you. And I need you. And you don’t reply to me? It’s a long time already, but I will not stop calling you until you are here. For I feel sure that you will come.
…. Your Yvette.
